Chapter Seven

Azri sat at the table, with drawings spread out all over the tiled table. The green tiles danced with reflective light casting shadows on the open stained-glass window. The early engine prototype was drawn in charcoal, an older model that hadn’t been used since the birth of their third sun. He contemplated the project thoughtfully, letting his fingers dance across his chin as thoughts flittered through his mind. He wasn’t even completely sure they could build a spaceship from the materials the planet had to offer.

He shook his head, dispelling the thoughts of the ship as he thought of his mate. The last two weeks had been rough, but Eric had been a great sport about it all. Azri had figured out it took a lot to get his mate’s feather’s ruffled. For that alone he was grateful. The hardest part that Azri had noticed was Eric getting accustomed to living in a small space with so many people. It wasn’t a hard adjustment for his crew since they were used to living on a ship together for long periods of time.

The only light in the room was cast by a small lightbulb held tightly by a fixture in the ceiling. Darkness had fully set, and the moon was shining brightly through the window of the back door behind him, casting everything in that eerie nighttime glow that accompanied the planet’s darkness. Azri could see every chip in the paint, every crack, and in a way it saddened him. His mate deserved better than the life he had been given. He wanted nothing more than to steal his mate away from this place, and take him home.

The soft sound of feet pulled Azri from his thoughts. He looked up to see Lyric standing in the open archway. His smaller stature was framed by the much larger opening, calling attention to the large jagged scar that ran across his bare chest. Azri had never asked what the scar was from, figuring if the smaller man wanted to share, he would have. Azri pushed the chair next to him out, offering it to his longtime friend. Lyric almost jumped into the chair at the offer.

“What are the chances of this working?” Lyric asked, nodding toward the drawing on the table. Azri shrugged and sighed. He knew Lyric was more comfortable planetside than in space, but Azri wasn’t. He missed being in space, and the freedom flying offered him. He had never done well being trapped on a planet. The longer he stayed, the more trapped he felt. He was haunted by his past, and with no way to leave, it appeared he would be dealing with the ghosts he left long ago. He sighed again, a constant expression of the frustrations he felt at being confined.

“You know, it does get easier with time. It helps to just think about what you can do right now. The rest can all wait. Constantly worrying over what you cannot change is a long path full of ghosts I am not sure you want to confront,” Lyric commented.
